Hospitals

Charan uses dance therapeutically with a range of patients, as regular or one-off workshops, as part of collaborative projects, or giving performances. He has particularly worked in hospitals with patients with mental health needs such as Lyn Bank, Queen Margaret's and the Royal Edinburgh.

Case Study: Lynebank case study

Charan worked weekly at LyneBank for 2 years. Over the months patients developed the ability to express themselves through movement. Pieces were created within the group, and connections and friendships grew. Staff were amazed at the changes.

"Charan worked with us at Lynebank over many months and he became an essential part of hospital life, lighting up our drab corridors with his genial presence. He possesses a unique ability which allows him to communicate meaningfully with different people- a process which is seemingly effortless but marvelous to behold- and he then leads his new friends on journeys of self-discovery and creativity. He brings genuine joy, and both staff and clients really looked forward to his weekly visits; through dance he connects with people and through contact with him people's lives are immeasurably enriched. We owe him a great debt and will forever cherish him in our hearts." David Swift, Artist in Residence

Case Study: Interactive Creative Dance at Forthview Day Hospital, Queen Margaret's

Charan facilitated a weekly creative dance class for people with and without disabilities. Participants explored their own movements and learnt how to combine them with others to create new movements and compositions. Participants built trust, increased self-awareness and developed appreciation of others. No previous experience was necessary - the requirement was just to come with an open heart and a desire to experiment.

Staff: "I feel quite privileged to have worked with you, you brought fun, love and joy into Forthview, and even the most skeptical patients were won over. Some people who were deeply depressed now show signs of enjoyment and pleasure. The music and the eye contact with everyone around the room broke down barriers; touch and acceptance of every one for who they were made people feel special. The smile on peoples faces light up the room." Mary McArthur

Participants: "Very exotic, light on his feet", "could have watched him all day", "very uplifting and fun", "wonderful permanent smile on his face, looked happy and made us feel happy", "Spoke to everyone and made them feel special", "Excellent footwork made me feel good and got rid of all the stiffness in my body", "was just perfect", "very unusual, held our attention"
